Calls for students and recent graduates to take part in its

XXV International University Theatre Festival

Rules:

I. National participation

  1. Student groups currently enrolled in high school or in an undergraduate programme with or without a focus in theatre, artistic initiation schools, and graduates from professional theatre schools are welcome to participate.
  1. All group members must belong to a public or private educational institution from any state of the Mexican Republic and the Metropolitan Area; their accreditation to it is obligatory and they must fulfil the requirements below.
  1. The contestants should send the filled registration datasheet, and present a complete play (free theme) with a minimum one hour and maximum three hours duration. The participating groups will be in charge of managing everything related to copyrights for its presentation (if applicable). UNAM’s Theatre Management Office will take no part in any copyright related conflict between the groups and the authors. Any group involved in any dispute of this nature will be automatically disqualified.
  1. The Organising Committee will set the times, dates and spaces in which the plays will be presented during the Selection Stage. UNAM’s Theatre Management Office will assign them according to the schools’ location and technical needs of the production. Taking into consideration the intricacy of the scheduling, it is important to note that under no circumstances changes will be made and the groups must adapt to the proposed conditions of the organisation, they should also sign a responsibility letter accepting the terms. In the given case that the group decides to forfeit its participation, a two weeks’ notice must be given before the agreed performance date.
  1. The group of each enrolled play (actors and creative team) must be integrated by regular students registered in the school or faculty which they represent. To cover this requisite, the group should provide a written letterhead proof, issued by their educational institution, with the listed names, student numbers and / or accounts of the members. A maximum of two external members by production are allowed for Categories A, B and C1 (one external actor & one external creative team member). For Category C2, just one exception is allowed (one external actor); however the creative team and staff may include any external staff or designer required and invited by the participating school. For Category C3, groups must be integrated by recent graduates (maximum three years) of professional theatre schools and the written letterhead proof must be issued by the school from where the majority of the members have graduated. The written letterhead proof must contain the listed names, student numbers and / or accounts of the participating members. For this last category, a maximum of three external members are allowed (between actors and creative team) as long as the group is able to prove (with the letterhead proof) that it is formed by at least and 80% of graduates from a same institution.
  1. The groups that have been benefited by the Theatre Incubator programme, with a financial support for their production, won’t be allowed to participate with that specifically benefited play during the festival.
  1. The applicants will be able to register under one of the following categories:

“A” High school level

“B” Degree level

“C” Professional theatre schools in the following subcategories:

           “C1” Student’s staging directed by students

           “C2” Student’s staging directed and / or mentored by teachers or professionals

           “C3” Staging by graduates (director & actors with a maximum of three years from having concluded their studies)

  1. The participating groups, along with their respective institutions, will be responsible for the transportation of the actors and the production for the performance in the Selection Stage and the Grand Final (if selected).
  1. The participating groups from the states of the Republic, along with the schools that they represent, will fund the transportation and lodging of two judges to their state to watch the play during the Selection stage. In the given case that the group is promoted to the final, they must cover the expenses regarding their transportation (and the ones of their production) to Mexico City, as well as the costs for food and accommodation.
  1. Performances that have already been presented in previous editions of the festival won’t be allowed to participate.

II. International Participation

  1. Student groups that are currently enrolled in professional theatre schools as well as recent graduates from professional schools of theatre are welcome to participate.

International group may enrol in one of the following theatre schools’ subcategories:

“C1” Student staging directed by students

           “C2” Student staging directed and / or mentored by teachers or professionals

           “C3” Staging by graduates (director & actors with a maximum of three years from having concluded their studies)

  1. The group members must belong and be accredited to a public or private educational institution from any country. They must show their accreditation to the institution through a letterhead letter.
  1. The contestants should send a video of a complete play (free theme) with a minimum one hour and maximum three hours duration. The participating groups will be in charge of managing everything related to copyrights for its presentation (if applicable). UNAM’s Theatre Management Office will take no part in any copyright related conflict between the groups and the authors. Any group involved in any dispute of this nature will be automatically disqualified.
  1. Interested groups should send a written letterhead proof issued by their educational institution, the filled registration datasheet, script from the play, and video (DVD or Youtube/ Vimeo link) with subtitles (if the play is not in Spanish or English), in order to be assessed by the Judges (one play per group). If selected, they will perform during the second stage (Grand Final) in Mexico City (see attached file).
  1. The group of each enrolled play (actors and creative team) must be integrated by regular students registered in the school or faculty which they represent. III. Requesting an application form

Once requested, the forms should be sent back according to the corresponding dates of its category (see section IV) in a digital file (with a written proof from the institution that supports the group) to the Festivals’ e-mail. Once the data has been checked, a confirmation with the Rules of Operation and a Responsibility Letter, which must be sent back with a signature, will be sent so that the groups may proceed to pay the required fee.

IV. Registration

1. The present call will be opened from the moment of its publication; the registration by category will be carried out in a staggered way in the following dates:

Categories “A” and “B” from 7 to 11 of August (national)

Category “C-2” from 14 to 18 of August (national and international)

Category “C1” & “C-3” from 21 to 25 of August (national and international)

Document reception will carry on until a day before the limit deadline given for each category. This is done with the objective of allowing the necessary time to notify if the application was accepted in order to proceed with the corresponding payment. Late applications won’t be taken into consideration.

2. The inscription fee will be of $400.00 (FOUR HUNDRED MEXICAN PESOS 00/100).

3. A confirmation will be sent to all the participating groups along with a form to pay through a bank deposit. Once done, a scanned copy of the payment’s receipt should be sent to the e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

in order to complete the registration. With the email confirmation (if required) a voucher or receipt will be sent.

V. The event

  1. The event will happen in two stages:

The Selection stage will take place from September 25 to October 22, 2017. Every national group registered will be part of it, as well as the international groups which will be assessed through their video

  1. Both, the results of the finalist national groups, and the selection of the international ones will be published in Teatro UNAM’s website and the selected groups will be notified via email on October 31, 2017. These groups will perform during the Grand Final in front of a new jury, integrated by three experts, who will determine the winning play in each of the given categories. This will take place from 10 to 18(University Cultural Centre).
  1. In the given case that one of the finalist groups decides to forfeit its participation, the Organising Committee will decide if another performance selected by the jury will compete instead or if the vacant place will be left empty. For both of the stages it will be important to opportunely notify if there are any changes regarding the group members in order to again complete the conditions mentioned above.

VI. Awards

  1. The Jury will be formed by personalities with known prestige in theatre and they will be in charge of awarding the winner play in each category. The jury will also bestow honourable mentions in the categories of Best Actress, Best Actor and any other aspects that they consider to be outstanding.
  1. As a prize, the winning play in each category will be scheduled for performing in a special cycle plus the amount of $20,000.00 (TWENTY THOUSAND MEXICAN PESOS 00/100).
  1. The award ceremony will take place on February 18, 2018.
  1. There will be only one winner in each of the categories, and under no circumstances a draw will be declared. In the given case, that a winner is not able to present its performance during the cycle, its presentation will be considered declined from it.
  1. The jury’s verdict will be unappealable.

Notes:

  • Any unspecified matters in the present call will be announced and solved by the committee in a timely matter.
  • Registration to the festival implies that the group accepts the given conditions in the present call.
